About Southeastern Oklahoma State University

Southeastern Oklahoma State University, also known as Southeastern or simply SOSU or SE, is a public university in Durant, which is a city in Bryan County, in the US state of Oklahoma, with a population estimated at a number of more than 13 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the 2nd largest city within the Choctaw Nation, after McAlester and Poteau.

SE was established in 1909, when the Second Oklahoma State Legislature approved an act designating Durant as the site for a normal school to serve Bryan, Atoka, Choctaw, Carter, LeFlore, Latimer, Love, Marshall, McIntosh, McCurtain, Pittsburg and Pushmataha. The institution's current name was adopted in August, 1974, when Southeastern State College became Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Today, Southeastern offers its students, who number approximately 4000, associate's, bachelor's and master's degree in various areas of study, the university being a leader in aviation, education and business administration studies, being the only university in the state to offer a Master of Science in Aviation.

Athletics

SOSU's athletic teams are known as the Savage Storm and they compete in NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference, North Division, in sports such as baseball, football, tennis, rodeo and several other sports, dedicated for both men and women. Their distinctive colors are blue and gold.
